How to Minimise Cell Phone Radiation Emissions

Minimising the amount of radiation emitted by your cell phone begins with your choice of network. Cell phones use adaptive power control, which means that they transmit with the lowest possible power that will allow them to communicate with the nearest base station. The further it is to the nearest base station, the more power your phone will use and so the more radiation it will emit. Before you choose a cell phone network it is therefore worth investigating the signal coverage in your area offered by the different operators. The better the coverage, the less power your phone will use, and the less radiation it will emit. For this reason, in spite of the safety concerns surrounding base stations, cell phone users may actually be safer if there is a base station in their neighbourhood than if there isn’t.

You can also minimise the radiation emitted by your cell phone by ensuring that you have the best signal possible each time that you use it. Cell phones display a signal strength bar on the screen. The better the signal, the lower the radiation level. Before you make a call, you can test the signal strength at various locations. By making calls only when the signal is strong, you can reduce your exposure to radiation.

Even in a specific location, there are steps that you can take to ensure that your cell phone signal is as strong as is possible and so that your exposure to radiation is as low as is possible. For instance, your cell phone signal is likely to be best if your head is not positioned between your phone and the base station, intercepting a proportion of your call and absorbing it into the brain. In many situations the minimum exposure to cell phone radiation will be with the phone towards the window. By standing in the right position, you can ensure the best signal possible, and so reduce the risks associated with cell phone use.

Reducing the amount of radiation that your cell phone emits, however, is not the only way of using your phone more safely; you can also reduce the proportion of that radiation that you absorb. For details on how, read How to Minimise Cell Phone Radiation Absorption.
